Marketplace Fairness Coalition Responds To National Taxpayers Union Poll

March 14, 2018

Washington, D.C. – The Marketplace Fairness Coalition (MFC) released the following statement today in response to the National Taxpayers Union's (NTU) poll on E-Fairness:

"NTU's poll is highly misleading. It suggests that consumer and small business concerns about the collection of sales tax are best addressed by inaction, but that is incorrect. Certainly, businesses and consumers would benefit from simplifications and modernizations, and E-Fairness legislation like RTPA could provide that. It also should be noted that other national polling shows once consumers learn that they are supposed to pay the tax, even if the seller does not collect it, they actually prefer that the sales tax be collected and remitted for them as is done by brick-and-mortar sellers on every purchase."

Americans from across the political spectrum have expressed overwhelming support for E-Fairness legislation to close the online sales tax loophole, according to national polling conducted by Opinion Research Corporation:

  • Seven out of 10 Americans support requiring online-only vendors to collect sales tax at the time of purchase.
  • Eight out of 10 Americans think it would be easier to collect sales tax from online-only vendors at the time of purchase.
  • Over half of Americans think that the current uneven playing field is inherently unfair and gives online-only vendors a clear, competitive advantage.
  • Nine out of 10 Americans say local retailers are important to their community’s economic health and prosperity."
