Marketplace Fairness Coalition Condemns Heritage Action For America's Opposition To RTPA

October 4, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Today, in response to Heritage Action for America's statement on the Remote Transactions Parity Act (RTPA), the Marketplace Fairness Coalition issued the following statement:

"The Remote Transactions Parity Act and its Senate counterpart, the Marketplace Fairness Act, level the playing field for Main Street sellers, protect businesses and consumers from unduly burdensome regulation, and seek to restore power to states. Heritage Action for America, in its opposition to RTPA, is defending the antiquated status quo: an uneven playing field that hurts small businesses and a complex, costly web of state and local tax rules that hurts sellers and consumers alike. What happened to Heritage standing for free market competition?

Additionally, over the next five years, states are likely to see their tax base continue to erode, to the tune of $211 billion in remote sales tax revenue. Without a federal E-Fairness solution state and local governments will have to look to raise or create new taxes to fund essential services like public safety and infrastructure. It's time for an E-Fairness solution that will level the playing field for Main Street businesses, and enable critical funding for state and local governments to support first responders, teachers, and law enforcement."
